Tips on how to arrange and prepare for house clearance

Clear-it Norwich Guide 2021

This guide below offers practical tips and tricks to help you arrange a House Clearance.

Please note, the same process applies if you are in a block of flats, or apartments.

Quick Tip: Remember, the point of a house clearance is to ENABLE and HELP YOU! Whether you need to free up space for a relative coming to stay or you just want to reclaim some space in your garage. Your situation may be unique, so ignore any advice that you know won’t help you, and focus on easy wins!

STEP 1: Identify what you don’t need

Broken items are easy to identify. Does this item bring me joy? Have you used it in the last 3 months? If no to both of those, then SET IT FREE!

If you have time, you can make your way from one room to another, and box up or bag unwanted items.

Don’t just limit yourself to your spare room or attic. If you can, split your time into stages to ensure you attend your spare room, garden, attic, loft, cellar, shed, down the side of the house etc.

Remember most house clearances are more effective if you get rid of as much as you can. But, if it is more helpful to you to do it in stages, then do so!

STEP 2: Can you get everything into one place?

Sometimes this isn’t possible, but if you have a garage / spare room / front garden, or just a space somewhere, it will be easier to manage. For example it’s easier to get quotes for rubbish removals, and quicker to get cleared if everything is in one place.

STEP 3: Can you give anything away?

One of the best forms of reuse is to find friends and family who may want to adopt one of your items. You may have a bed or sofa or chair in good condition. We will always try to find home for reusable items, but often what one person thinks is reusable, another person may think it’s junk.

*Charities always require fire labels on furniture in order to legally pass them on. For example if your fire safety label has been torn off your sofa, then a charity won’t be allowed to pass it on.

STEP 4: Find a good local house clearance company

Ask friends and family for recommendations.

Make sure you screen them to ensure they are recycling and disposing of their waste responsibly. All good house clearance companies will give clear information as to where the waste goes.

Some people need stuff gone quickly, with minimal fuss. With Clear-it Norwich for example, you can make a quick FLEXIBLE booking for any sized load. Our team will arrive and confirm the load once they can see it all.
